A Journey To Diamond Hill Hong Kong

The first place to visit in our Hong Kong itinerary is Diamond Hill. Nope! We (me and Olive) did not aim to look for diamond deposits or even to see a diamond mine but we aimed to see a gem of a place filled with lush greeneries and lotus ponds with intricate Chinese architecture. According to an article I read, the Diamond Hill area was a stone quarry before and that's the reason why you will see gigantic rocks and amazing rock formations in the area.

Our hotel is situated near the Tsim Sha Tsui and Jordan MTR station so it was not difficult to go from one station to another. For this part of the tour, we went inside the Tsim Sha Tsui subway station in the Tsuen Wan line (red line) then alighted at the Mong Kok station to transfer to the Kwun Tong line (green line) going to Diamond Hill. It may be a little overwhelming at first but once you get the hang of reading your map and you keep yourself aware of the many signs in the MTR subway stations then you will be in good hands. Travelling through the MTR is generally safe and fast. Every coach also has a map on the side of the train to show you where you are already and the PA system is in Cantonese and English.

The Diamond Hill MTR station is attached to the Plaza Hollywood shopping mall. The mall was still closed when we were in the area so we were not able to explore it. The garden is not hard to find at all. When you get out of the mall, you have to climb a few flight of stairs and then cross the street to get to the Nan Lian Garden. The garden is the gated property with tall brown wooden fence. Oh by the way, if you plan to visit this garden, make sure that you do not have a tripod with you as it is not allowed.

As soon as you enter the gate, you instantly feel the air of serenity. The Nan Lian Garden is a Tang Dynasty-style park designed to complement the adjacent Chi Lin Nunnery. It is by far the most beautiful garden I have ever seen to date. Lush trees, well-manicured bushes, ponds with koi fishes, ponds with lotus flowers, bonsais, podiums, a pagoda, rock formations and a waterfall will surely leave you in awe. The place will surely provide the peace and quiet that the busy chaotic outside world cannot offer. Following the one-way route, visitors will be able to stroll along the Banyan Grove and Pine Path. The pines looked so pretty, they almost looked like bigger than bonsai plants.

hkP1120150

Each building is made of wood, but without the use of a single nail. Amazing eh? The pieces fit together somewhat like a jigsaw puzzle. This is because the Chinese believe that when wood is used to make a building its life continues to fill the structure. I was literally amazed at the structures standing proud right before my eyes. The Chinese Timber Architecture Gallery was still closed when we entered the garden so we were not able to get in. There are 3 main exhibition halls and 2 tea houses, a big fish pond, a waterfall and a few small buildings which are the common set up of the Wealthy in their gardens in the past.

We continued to explore the park and found a very intricately designed pagoda, the one aptly called as Golden Pagoda. The pathway is connected by a bright orange bridge to the pagoda. This area however is not accessible to visitors and is considered the park's centerpiece. It is called the Pavilion of Absolute Perfection. Near the pagoda is a little spot named as the Fragrance Hill. We were not able to smell anything though because the plants were not flowering at this time of the year.

A Journey To Diamond Hill Hong Kong Part 2

This post is the second part to the journey to Diamond Hill in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Adjacent to the Nan Lian Garden is the Chi Lin Nunnery. You need not go out of the garden if you want to explore this as well. I was hesitant to go because I wasn't Catholic in the first place but the curious case in me won. When we entered the nunnery, we experienced tremendous silence and calmness and it wasn't the nunnery I was expecting. I truly enjoyed looking around all corners of this tourist spot.

Covering a space of more than 33,000 square meters, the temple complex includes a nunnery, temple halls, Chinese gardens and a vegetarian restaurant. The temple hall have statues of the Sakyamuni Buddha, the goddess of mercy Guanyin and other Bodhisattvas. These statues are made from gold, clay, wood and stone. When we went there, a Buddhist service was ongoing so we were able to hear the chants and we rested in one of the benches when the service was finished so we saw everyone garbed in their religious clothing. I tried to ask one of the attendees of the service if they are required to wear the clothing when attending but I didn't get any answer as she didn't understand my question and she didn't understand English too.

The Chi Lin Nunnery is a serene place, with lotus ponds, immaculate bonsai tea plants and blooming bougainvilleas, and silent nuns delivering offerings of fruit and rice to Buddha and arhats (Buddhist disciples freed from the cycle of birth and death) or chanting behind intricately carved screens. The design (involving intricately interlocking sections of wood joined without a single nail) is intended to demonstrate the harmony of humans with nature. It’s pretty convincing – until you look up at the looming neighbourhood high-rises behind the complex. You enter the complex through the Sam Mun, a series of ‘three gates’ representing the Buddhist precepts of compassion, wisdom and ‘skilful means’. The first courtyard, which contains the delightful Lotus Pond Garden, gives way to the Hall of Celestial Kings, with a large statue of the seated Buddha surrounded by the deities of the four cardinal points. Behind that is the main hall, containing a statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha flanked by two standing disciples and two seated bodhisattvas (Buddhist holy people). -Lonely Planet

The four holy sites as places of pilgrimage for Buddhists are Lumbini, where the Buddha was born, Bodh Gaya, where the Buddha was enlightened under the Bodhi tree; Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first teaching of the Dharma; and Kusinagara, where the Buddha passed away.

The temple halls and the Chinese garden in front of the nunnery is open to the public daily without charge. However, it is prohibited to take pictures of the buddhas and the architecture of the nunnery.

I have been correctly predicting who will be crowned as Miss Universe every year but this year predicting is too tall an order. It is just so hard to choose. I have watched the preliminary competition for swimwear and evening gown and I have narrowed my list to say the least. I hope I guess it right again this year. Anyway, here's the LINK if you want to watch the preliminary competition as well staged at Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo Brazil. Might I add that the male host is really witty and Ximena's accent is quite endearing.

I would like to share my list with you. Please feel free to share your list with me too by leaving a comment. Oh by the way, here's a little trivia: This year marks the year with the most participating countries and territories, 89 ladies will all be vying for the Miss Universe 2011 crown surpassing the record high of 86 back in 2006. Here's my lucky 17 (I know only 16 will be chosen but let me just thrown in a wildcard): (these pictures are not mine, photo credited to the Miss Universe website)

Miss Universe 2011 is Miss Angola

Oh I didn't guess the winner this year. Angola came totally unnoticed at least for my eyes until her name/country was called for the 5th spot in the Top 16. She deserves it though. Her beauty is not common and she's got that x-factor in her. Looking at the remaining 5 ladies, she was my other bet if Miss Philippines won't bag it.

Leila Lopes from Angola was crowned Miss Universe Monday night and this is first for her country. “Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn’t change a thing,” Lopes said when asked her interview question.

For those who haven't watched here's the Top 16 list: (I correctly predicted 11 - not too bad)

Miss France, Miss Kosovo, Miss Colombia, Miss China, Miss Angola, Miss Australia, Miss Puerto Rico, Miss Brazil, Miss Netherlands, Miss USA, Miss Ukraine, Miss Panama, Miss Costa Rica, Miss Portugal (won most votes from online fans), Miss Philippines and Miss Venezuela

After the swimsuit competition, it was narrowed down to 10:

Miss Australia, Miss Costa Rica, Miss France, Miss Ukraine, Miss Portugal, Miss Panama, Miss Philippines, Miss Angola, Miss China and Miss Brazil

After the evening gown competition, the list was cut in half:

Miss Ukraine, Miss Philippines, Miss China, Miss Brazil and Miss Angola

At this point I was pretty confident that the Philippines will bag the crown but much as I am dismayed, Miss Angola deserves the spot too. I just hope next time there wouldn't be any questions about religion or anything that is not generic. I just think that question is too tricky because some of the judges may not share the point of view of the contestant and they might not like the response no matter how flawlessly it was delivered (with no interpreter at that). But I applaud her for saying what she really feels. I like how she did not answer with a canned statement. And oh, Lea could have thought of a more thought-provoking question, something that a kindergarten pageant queen can't answer. Just saying!

All is well that ends well...Miss Angola was proclaimed the winner. First runner-up was Miss Ukraine, 2nd runner-up Miss Brazil, 3rd runner-up Miss Philippines and 4th runner-up Miss China.

SIDE NOTE: I think the fan score is stupid because it didn't really have any bearing on the final score. I liked the judge's score better.

From Diamond Hill To The Peak

I am going to continue sharing to you my wonderful readers what transpired during my short but sweet getaway to Hong Kong. After the journey to Diamond Hill (Nan Lian Gardens and Chi Lin Nunnery), Olive and I decided to go to The Peak. We were supposed to stop by the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens but we got lost because there were too many tourists and it was so humid that exploring the place wasn't that much of an option at all. This is one thing I regret not doing though (I still dream about it right now). I will be posting bus numbers at the end of this article so you know what to hop in to and not get lost like us. I guess the McDonalds pancake breakfast I had was not enough to fuel my brain eh?

My  breakfast. See the arc detail on the butter? I kinda like it.

From the Diamond Hill MTR Station (Kwun Tong Line-Green), we alighted at Mong Kok Station (Tsuen Wan Line-Red) so we could take the train passing by the Central Station. At this point in our travel, I was thinking to myself how convenient this mode of transportation not to mention how quickly it gets you from Point A to Point B. It also helped that we each bought Octopus cards (can be used to pay MTR, bus, fast food, among others). It may be ironic but I think Hong Kong is chaotic in an organized way. If you know how to read a map and follow directions, exploring it won't be rocket science. All you need is a conditioned pair of feet and legs for walking, maybe an umbrella for any sudden downpour and your Octopus card.

We took the J2 exit to get out of the subway and passed by Garden Road (where OFWs congregate especially on Sundays for some picnic and the like). Across the park is the Bank of China Tower, you have to walk a steep cemented path (about 500m) and then you will see this:

I guess we weren't as early as we thought we were, there were already more than a thousand people in line ahead of us. Again, it was a good thing that we have our Octopus card because it was accepted as mode of payment for the entrance fee. By the way, the Peak Tram opens at 7AM until midnight (Monday-Sunday including public holidays) and the tram departure schedule is every 10-15 minutes. Not that bad, I should say. We paid HKD$65 (about Php400) for a Peak Tram Sky Pass (return trip on the famous Peak Tram and the fabulous panoramic views of Hong Kong from The Sky Terrace 428, the highest 360° viewing terrace in Hong Kong).

This is the 123 Anniversary The Peak I Love You HKD$1 Promotion poster. It started on May 1 and ended June 30 this year. Tram tickets, special items, restaurant coupons and etc can be bought for only a dollar if you have a Hong Kong Resident ID. You can also bring home a wax hand souvenir for only a dollar. Too bad the promo has ended when we went there. Maybe next year...(first I must find a friend with a Hong Kong ID).

This is the tram station at The Peak. The Peak is locally known as Mt. Austin or Victoria Peak.

The view of Central, Kowloon and Victoria Harbour from the Victoria Gap, near the top of Victoria Peak.

Some trinkets and souvenirs that you can buy at The Peak Market. Items here are sold with a mark-up so I didn't buy anything from here. My stingy self won...

The view was amazing up there if only it didn't rain. You guessed it right; we didn't get to experience the Sky Terrace because it rained, the guards discouraged for us to go up. We didn't insist and just opted to get inside the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. And that's another story...

As promised, here are the bus numbers you can take depending on your origin:

This blog post won't need too much words I suppose because it's picture heavy in its self. Enjoy!!! Oh, check out this LINK to know how to get to the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum by tram. The museum is where celebrity and history meet. We had a lot of fun touring inside except for the fact that we didn't really know almost a third of the figures because they were Hong Kong artists. I didn't have a picture with Jackie Chan because his was figure was put up outside the museum and if you have your picture taken with, you will have to pay the Kodak crew (profitable business I should say).

Pablo Picasso, Spanish painter. His complete name is a mouthful. Pablo Diego Jose Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Maria de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santisima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso. Beat that?

Jack Sparrow, famous pirate.  He was brought to life by actor Johnny Depp.

Elvis Presley, King of Rock and Roll.

Lady Gaga or in Hong Kong Gaga Lady. I had a giggle when I saw her name on the wall. Maybe that's why she's rockin' her poker face here.

And so the picture post continues...

Walking on the red carpet leading to the moviestars room.

One with the Royals for  a day (Queen Elizabeth, Prince Phillip - The Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Anne and the Little Miss. Princess Diana was in another section of the gallery. I had a picture with her but it was blurry.

Hamming it up with President Barack Obama.

With William Shakespeare, an English poet and playwright.

A work of art of Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn with me in it.

Meet the Beatles. I am sure your parents were once fanatics of this group.

Apart from these personalities, you will also see some famous Hong Kong and Hollywood actors and actresses, singers and performers among others. Some of the ones I remember are Eddie Murphy, Michael Jackson, Andy Lau, Louis Koo, Barbie Hsu, Lang Lang, Aaron Kwok, Kelly Chen, Tina Turner, Spiderman, McDull characters, Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Mahatma Gandhi, Bill Clinton, Deng Xiao Ping, Donald Tsang and etc. Jackie Chan's figure was outside the gallery so even if you won't enter, you would still get to see him.

Hong Kong Through My Lens

$

My camera was with me all the time while we toured every nook and cranny of Hong Kong (not to mention I was in so much pain because of a leg injury). Yes, you read it right. I endured a very painful left leg strain which started on our second night until we went home. I described the pain to my sister and she told me not to massage it as it may lead to something worse (I later found out from our office nurse that I had claudication -atherosclerosis that blocks blood flow in the arteries). I think it was sheer adrenaline that got me going because when I arrived in Manila I could not even walk straight anymore, I had to drag my left leg and take small steps with my right leg.

Enough about my pain story, here are some random pictures I took while doing some touristy stuff:

Walking along Canton Road. The Victorian-inspired building across where I am standing is the 1881 Heritage Building. It has the Tiffany&Co, Piaget, Breguet, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Mont Blanc store among others. The original site of 1881 Heritage was the headquarters of the Hong Kong Marine Police from the 1880's to 1996.

The Rimowa and Rolex store situated in Mody Road (Tsim Sha Tsui East) , Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Salisbury Road at night. We walked through the underpass to go to the Avenue of Stars.

Oh oui!!! They serve corn in a cob in KFC.

These are bright fuschia flowers outside the Nan Lian Garden. The cultivated flower bed is what separates the pedestrian walkway from the busy street.

The lobby of the Landmark Mall in Central Hong Kong. I like the flower arrangement. I might copy that someday. Peg!

My lunch at the ThreeSixty Restaurant at the 4th Floor of the Landmark Mall. The sushi plate costs HK$50 as you can see (about Php320) and the soda costs HK$12 (about Php75). The rice topped with veggies and fish is Olive's lunch and if my memory serves me right it costs HK$78 (about Php500).

The ThreeSixty Restaurant is a food court that serves dishes from different parts of the world. They have a wide assortment of food for every one. I saw Thai, Indian, Japanese, Vietnamese, American, among others.

This double-decker tram is one of the earliest mode of transportation in Hong Kong considered to be one of the most environment-friendly mass transit system. As of 2009, the tram system is owned by Veolia Transport with 100% stake in the company.

Hong Kong has small roads but traffic is not as congested as Manila because you rarely see private cars. The mass transit system is very efficient that local and tourists take advantage of such.

This is somewhere near the Causeway Bay shopping area if I am not mistaken.

Escada advertisement in one of the double-decker trams.Tres chic!

I still admire the "organized chaos" that is Hong Kong.

Near Sogo Department Store.

This area is brimming full of people - locals and tourists.

Across the ferry in Wan Chai going to TST. One of the classic ways to enjoy the Victoria Harbour for cheap.
Fare Table

My view from my ferry seat. The tower is called the Clock Tower located on the southern shore of Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon. The tower is made of red bricks and granite and measures 44 meters. There is a wooden staircase inside the tower. I am not sure if it is open for the public though. Behind the clock is the HK Cultural Center, HK Space Museum and HK Museum of Art.

Happy Feet! :-)

Exploring Lantau Island

We woke up to overcast skies but we were determined to explore Lantau Island (Ngong Ping Cable Cars, Po Lin Monastery, Tian Tan Buddha and of course Disneyland). And mind you, it was the longest train ride I have ever had in my whole life time (in terms of stations and transfers and not time). It wasn't a bore though, I enjoyed the scenery outside (from the skycrapers to the boats in the harbour to the shipyards and the like).

Since we woke up early and had our breakfast near the Jordan MTR station , we decided to not return to TST station anymore. From the Jordan station, we headed to the Central station. We then transferred to the Tung Chung line through the Hong Kong station then went straight to Tung Chung station. Travel time was less than 30 minutes I think. If you want to take a different mode of transportation to Tung Chung, click this LINK. We arrived at the station before 10AM so we decided to take a stroll inside the Citygate Outlets (home to more than 80 international brand names such as Coach, Lancel, Diane Von Furstenbeg, Callaway, Cerruti, Mango, IT, Armani Exchange, Calvin Klein, Club Monaco, Escada, Burberry, Max Mara and a lot more). If I brought lots of shopping money I could have stayed there all day.

We headed towards the Tung Chung Town Centre Cable Car Terminal around 10AM and a long line greeted us. It was a little overcast and humid but excitement got us through.

Originally the site of fishing villages, the island has been developed in recent years with the construction of Tung Chung New Town on its north-western coast and the completion of several major infrastructure projects, including Lantau Link (1997), Hong Kong International Airport (1998), Hong Kong Disneyland (2005) and Ngong Ping 360 (2006). - Wikipedia

Hong Kong Disneyland Part 1

Overall, our Hong Kong trip was well-planned to say the least and of course part of our plan is to go to one of the happiest places on Earth - Hong Kong Disneyland. And yes we did. Inspite of walking under the sweltering heat of the sun hopping from one attraction to another (with an illustrated map in one hand and umbrella on the other), we managed to tour the whole park (which wasn't that huge I should say). We missed out on the railroad train between Main Street USA and Fantasyland but we felt like we have enjoyed it more than we had hoped to be.

After eating lunch at the Citygate Outlets, we then took the train from Tung Chung going to Sunny Bay station and then transfer to the train going to the Disneyland Resort Station. The coaches were different from the normal MTR coaches because of the Disney features. The seats were cushioned, windows are mickey-shaped as well as the handles, and there were Disney characters enclosed in glass casing.

It was a short trip between two stations and soon we alighted in a Victorian-inspired train station. The train and the station were both attractions in itself. As soon as we stepped inside the Mickey Mouse train, I felt like I was transported to another dimension -a dimension of happiness where children have so much fun as the adults.

More pictures and stories in my next blog post... Let me know what is or are your favorite Disneyland memories. I would love to know...

Can't Wait For Malaysia

As I was busy preparing my itinerary for my trip to Malaysia next month, the tourism song was on repeat in my playlist. I really love the soothing sound and the message the song conveys...

Where on Earth can an ordinary day
Begin in such an extraordinary way
Where can you watch the sunrise
And be near enough to touch it

Or find yourself in unfamiliar surroundings
And yet have so many friends
Where can you walk amongst giants
And not feel small

Or you become king and conquer kingdoms
All in a day
Where can you feel the curve of the earth
And be soothed by it's wonders

Or be in the present in some stranger
And yet feel so close
Where can you mingle with the oldest races
And be right uphold

Where can your wishes come true
Apart get full there anytime
A place like no where else on earth
Malaysia truly Asia

This video just made me all the more excited. My list is growing of places to see and food to try and everything I could squeeze in my itinerary. I hope one day the Philippines will be able to come up with a world class ad like this and yeah before anything else I hope the airport gets fixed already.

In the meantime, I will finish off my list while trying hard not to get distracted by the thought of who amasses the millions from the travel tax (Php1620) and terminal fee (Php750) collected from every passenger who passes through the worst airport in the whole world.

My Nuffnang Story

Where do I begin? I could not exactly remember how I knew of Nuffnang but I am sure that I encountered a eureka moment way back in June 2009. It's not that I have completely forgotten about everything and how it all started, it's because there were just so many memories from contests/activities/events that transpired. Please join me in recounting my Nuffnang story through quotations that have constantly inspired me.

I was doing my usual blogwalking when I first read about Nuffnang. I immediately checked out the webpage to read and know more about Asia-Pacific’s first and leading blog advertising community. I read the blog updates and there were two current contests ongoing at that time (Medicol League of Winners and You're The One, Goldilocks). I decided to join both after being a member right on the spot.

"You've got to get to the stage in life where going for it is more important than winning or losing." - Arthur Ashe

I immediately drafted my entries for the Medicol League of Winners and You're The One, Goldilocks promo. I won on the third day of the competition for Medicol and that secured me a spot for the grand prize. I was hoping to win on the first day but I had a hard time campaigning since I was in Dos Palmas that time. I can still recall how I got in an unpleasant conversation with a drugstore employee over the phone (my sister was the one who bought the Medicol caplets) because they refused to issue an official receipt for every five caplets bought. The call ended with them agreeing to issue the receipt as they understood why I needed such.

At the end of the competition, I won Php6000 Cebu Pacific airline gift certificates. I used it to buy the return tickets (MNL-DVO) of my dad, mom and sister when they visited me. I wrote about our trip to Boracay here. My sister won an iPod shuffle as well as my Uncle Don. Uncle Don is the one who patiently lined up to buy the Medicol caplets so big thank you goes out to him and to all my friends who spent their own money as well. Jonah, Joyce, Kristine and Rudy each won some Netopia surfing cards. Overall, I think and believe that I did not after all lose and I do not have the right to be a sore loser. If I count all the blessings that have been pouring in this year, I'd end up with a very long list for sure. I still am convinced that my job is a winner.

I also submitted my entry for Goldilocks but unfortunately I did not win. On second thoughts, my story was not at par with those who won. They clearly had to go through more difficult situations than I did in the past so they all deserved their win. I attended the awarding ceremony with my friend Jonah and we had fun decorating our cake and enjoyed eating it too.

I also joined the MTV search for the next famous blogger like no other. I did not win but I had fun writing about Denise Keller. Oh well, another lose but who cares? I still remained determined that one day I will bag that big prize. Patience with persistence are excellent virtues after all.

The loses I have experienced did not hinder me to participate in other contests sponsored by Nuffnang. It actually made me all the more inspired and motivated to keep going and participating. I also felt very elated that my readers have grown exponentially since I joined Nuffnang. This inspired me to write more often and to understand the demographics of my followers by looking at the analytics in my Nuffnang profile. When I started earning, I got more excited. It made me all the more excited to write more often than I used to. I've also engaged in regular blog walking to learn about how Nuffnang members handle their blogs. Seeing the passion in every blog entry I read made me feel accountable to my readers on a daily basis. I also had an experience when I became a non-exclusive Nuffnanger. I immediately thought that it may be because of the different ad units that I have posted in my blog. I had to do a complete overhaul of my blog until I returned to being a Glitterati. I couldn't be any happier then. I first cashed my earnings last February 2011. The month after that, I joined the ChurpChurp Rewards Program.

I still remember way back September 2009 when I read about the Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards. I was so tempted to join but digressed because I thought my blog was still too new in the community so I ended up not joining. I still wish I joined though.

Another activity that I wished I joined was the Medicol Advance The Nation Launch. I was invited by the Medicol League of Winners Grand Winner Camille Mathay through Facebook. I signified willingness to attend but due to some important tasks that I had to handle at work I wasn't able too. Again, I still wish I joined.

"A good balance of winning and losing is important. If you just win all the time, you won't get anything out of it; having some tough losses can be really important." -Andrew Shue

The next contest I joined was the Glutamax The New Me blog post contest. Again, I did not win but I am just so happy to have been able to share The New Me to my readers. What did I do? I just brushed myself and waited for the next contest again. I then joined Century Tuna Superbods Run blog post contest. This time I won! Around this time, I have caught the running bug already and so I didn't have that much time to join other contests such as the Catch a Real Leaf: a Paparazzi Blog Contest, Living In The World of Taborea, Enervon Hapontukin Contest, Häagen-Dazs Melting Me Slowly Contest, among others. I however joined the Red Shoes Story Contest. I did not win again this time but I knew in my heart that I am so lucky to have a friend in Rojo (the main character of the story I submitted).

Through Nuffnang, I won for myself the complete range of Neutrogena Fine Fairness Essence too. The post in the Nuffnang webpage made me check the Neutrogena Facebook Page. I joined the Nokia C7 contest and unfortunately it was another lose for me. My entry wasn't creative enough to make the cut. Again, because of so many tasks to do at work I was not able to join the Minute Maid Pulp Up Your Blog contest. Even then, all the bad taste of losing were all quelled when I became a Glitterati member.

I can only thank Nuffnang for inviting me to special movie screenings. I got invited to watch Salt (thanks to Heaven Ice Cream), The Social Network (thanks to PLDT myDSL), X-Men First Class (thanks to Hapee Toothpaste). I missed quite a few screenings because of the venue or because of conflict in my work schedule (see I work the graveyard shift).

Nuffamily Day!!! Bloggers and their families (in my case, my friends) went to Tagaytay. JAC Liner (the first bus with WIFI) sponsored three (3) special trips from Bonifacio Global City (the Nuffnang Philippines headquarters) to Crosswinds Swiss Luxury Resort. We were allotted the helipad of the resort for the fun games, lantern lighting and other activities. It was good to see familiar faces and their families especially the young kids who all had fun more than the adults I suppose. The location was perfect I should say. We were served lots and lots of food (bread, chips, pizza, chicken burger, donuts and a whole lot more) and different choices of drinks. You could tell everyone enjoyed. This is the first family event I joined since joining Nuffnang a little over two years ago. I've attended movie screenings, contest awarding and other activities but this one tops it all. If this event will happen again next year, I will for sure attend again.

I also participated in the International Blog Day. I wrote a post about the six blogs that I have recently discovered. Being a part of the blogging community has introduced me to people that have become friends along the way. I can only thank my love for writing for all the experiences and memories that I have enjoyed thus far with Nuffnang. Come 16 December 2011, 500 bloggers from around the Asia-Pacific region will flock to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards 2011 in Putrajaya Marriott. The Awards aims to not only honour the region's best bloggers, but also to bring together blogger communities from across Asia-Pacific. The Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards is brought to you by Volkswagen Malaysia and Putrajaya Marriott.

I am fervently wishing that Nuffnang will grant me the opportunity to commune with bloggers from around the Asia-Pacific region. I hope that this event will be added to my treasure trove of memories. Nuffnang, please make it happen for me?

Step Inside The Circuit and Join The Pact

I was lucky enough to get invited to the Johnnie Walker Philippines Step Inside The Circuit event last night at Prive Luxury Club. I feel even luckier that I got the chance to see two-time Formula One World Champion and current Johnnie Walker Responsible Drinking Ambassador Mika Hakkinen. He is also referred to as The Flying Finn. Seven-time world champion and rival Michael Schumacher said Hakkinen is the man he respected the most during his F1 career.

Interesting Fact: Mika Hakkinen has a pet named Clarence and ironically it's a turtle. Why ironic? Considering that he likes fast cars and he races like he flies...

Anyway, I and Jonah arrived at the venue later than we planned because of the rain. We were surprised however that the place is not crowded yet and people just started to trickle in just after we got ourselves our own table. As usual, my wondering eye spotted people clad in black so I guess we dressed to the occasion and we didn't feel left out. We were handed an exclusive Johnnie Walker Gold Pass (PH90701298). Around 1045PM, Mika and his entourage and a slew of bouncers and bodyguards arrived at the event. Jonah was at the bar that time so she wasn't able to see Mika up close. He passed by our table. I could have touched him if only I wasn't scared to be kicked out by his guards. LOL! It was surreal though.

The media people then flocked the F1 champion and that's my cue to make a beeline at the bar. I ordered 2 Whiskey Sour. I pity the bartender because he had to make so many cocktails as fast as he can. I probably spent a good 10 minutes at the bar and the program started as soon as I returned to my spot. Perfect timing!

The event hosts Marc Nelson, Andi Manzano and Pia Boren welcomed everyone and then interviewed the ambassador himself who then signed the Join The Pact board with his signature. I and Jonah signed the wall too. Just so when we finally drive, we would remember not to drink and drive. (I wasn't able to take a picture of the signed wall as there were so many people already.)

This is the Join The Pact signature board before all the signatures...

Before the party ended, names of 21 lucky holders of the Gold Pass were announced. They will be attending an exclusive cocktail party with Johnnie Walker and Mika Hakkinen at the Makati Shangri La. I don't know where I got my luck but my name was called. I'm going to step inside the circuit once more...

See y'all there!!!

Some pictures in the collage are from Google Images (Images 1,2,3,7,8,9) Images in the middle row were taken using my Blackberry. The picture of Button and Hakkinen are for me and the middle picture is for my friend Mina. I hope she will be stoked when I hand it over to her.

To cap off the Philippine visit of Mika Hakkinen, Johnnie Walker Responsible Drinking Ambassador, Johnnie Walker Philippines and Diageo hosted an intimate and exclusive cocktail party at Red, Makati Shangri La Hotel. Diageo is the world's leading premium drinks business with an outstanding collection of beverage alcohol brands across spirits, beer and wine. These brands include Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, J&B, Windsor, Buchanan's and Bushmills Whiskies, Smirnoff, Ciroc and Ketel One Vodkas, Baileys, Captain Morgan, Jose Cuervo, Tanqueray and Guinness. The party was attended by Mika Hakkinen and his entourage, Diageo employees, press people, bloggers and invited guests.

The former two-time Formula One World Champion arrived in Manila on November 4 and attended a slew of activities as part of the Johnnie Walker Join The Pact campaign. The campaign is a worldwide interactive responsible drinking initiative. The campaign encourages every consumer to visit www.jointhepact.com to add their signature to a global pledge to NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE.

The Join The Pact campaign, as its core, leverages the Johnnie Walker sponsorship of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula One team, and specifically the relationship between three Formula One Icons: ex-McLaren double World Champion Mika Hakkinen and former Formula One Would Champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button (Oh, I am praying JWP will bring Jenson Button or Lewis Hamilton to the country too soon!). The three represent two generations of Formula One and are the public faces of the campaign.

The campaign was first launched in Singapore in 2008 when Mika Hakkinen drove a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula One car through the streets of Singapore to demonstrate the importance of staying in control and never drinking and driving. Since his appointment, Mika has visited over 30 markets across four continents in his ambassadorial role. - Excerpts from the press kit provided at the event

The event was hosted by Pia Boren and cocktails and hors d'oeuvres were served. I was so bummed out that I cannot drink anything with alcohol as I was heading for work after the affair. It took a lot of self-control because I am still craving for the Whiskey Sour until this very minute. Diageo gifted Mika with silver and pearl encrusted cuff links and his girlfriend, Marketa Kromotova received a shawl made of piña cloth.

Before the party ended, Mika signed pictures and merchandise for the guests. I got a picture signed for me and another picture signed for my friend Mina who was not able to attend the event. I was genuinely on fan girl mode that time. Not only have I joined the pact, I also crossed out one item in my bucket list. Yay!

Tomatoes Anyone?

Ahhhh, tomatoes. That good old red, orange, green or yellow produce that's a staple in the kitchen. The tomato is a fruit and not a vegetable. I use it for cooking, for dips, for sauces among others. Oh, it's good in treating burns too. It is very rich in lycopene which is known to be a very good phytochemical and is a very good source of antioxidants. So yeah, I try to consume as much tomato as part of my diet as I can.

Anyway, I have read quite a few reviews and raves about this new product from Tony Moly. Yes, I am referring to the Tomatox Magic White Massage Pack. The packaging has this description: Tony Moly Tomatox Magic White Massage Pack contains water and tomato ingredients. It promises to bring instant dual magic brightening and vitalizing and detoxifying effects into the skin.

This product costs Php548 (around US$12.75). Each product comes with a box and a tomato-shaped container (80 grams). If you go to a Tony Moly counter and you see a tomato-shaped container then it's safe to say that you have the product I am talking about right now. This Korean product has been the talk of the town for a few months now and I thought it would not hurt to try it. Did I say the packaging is ubercute?

This post is not a review yet because I just tested it at the back of my hands I think it is always wise to do a spot test before full-on application to the face. After all, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. If you have sensitive skin, please try it on a small patch of your skin first to prevent any unwanted bumps and itch on your skin. It is also good to note that this product is very rich. I only applied a pea-sized amount on my hand and the coverage was impressive.

Directions For Use:
After cleansing your face, make sure to towel dry your skin. Take an adequate amount and slather it all over your face in a massaging motion for 1-2 minutes. After the application, leave it on your skin for 5-10 minutes like a mask. Wash with tepid water. Pat dry your face and observe the change and glow.

With this patch test I made, I immediately felt that my skin felt more supple. However, I did not notice any difference in the brightness. I felt like it hydrated my skin too. I am stoked though that I did not have any irritation whatsoever. I will try this for the first time tomorrow before bedtime and I will write another post as review as soon as I see any considerable result. By the way, this 80gram product will last you for a long time as you only need to use it 2-3 times every week.

Have you tried this product? Please share your thoughts...

P.S.
While we're at the topic of tomatoes, let me share to you that I have bought a couple of boxes of the infamous tomato pill from Mannings when I went to Hong Kong. I will try using it and I will report back if it's any good.

Any thoughts on this product? I would love to hear from you...

Canadian Food Feast at The Heat

What food spells Canada to you? For me, it's POUTINE (not even close to how Canada is spelled literally but it's Canadian representation at its best). EDSA Shangri La, together with the Canadian Embassy here in Manila, will give us a taste of what the Canadian kitchen has to offer through an all-out food fest at HEAT. The food festival will start this week and will commence on November 20.

Aptly called "Canada HEATs It Up", different specialties from Canadian provinces/states will be showcased for every discerning tongue in the Metro.

Incidentally, Shangri-La's executive sous chef Damon Campbell happens to be Canadian, and he calls his native country's rich cuisine a "culinary cornucopia". "This festival is a personal journey for me," Campbell said. "Being Canadian and from Vancouver, I drew inspiration from family recipes and the diverse regional cuisines." - Spot.Ph

It is also good to note that guests who dine for lunch or dinner get a chance to win a 2-night stay in a De Luxe Room at Shangri La Hotel, Vancouver, with round-trip transfers via Hong Kong from Air Canada.

The buffet is priced at Php1210++ for lunch (Mondays to Saturdays) and Php1565++ on Sundays while dinner is at Php1475 (Sundays to Thursdays ) and Php1665++ (Fridays to Saturdays).

The Canadian Food Festival at HEAT will be available for lunch and dinner until November 20. Buffet lunch is at 1130AM to 230PM and dinner at 630PM to 1030PM. Exposed: Tea and Honesty

I am writing this post because I wanted to share my story. I bit the bait and I got bitten in return. I know that vote padding (in this case "like" padding) is rampant but I did not expect that some people would go so low to the point of doing this for a box of tea. I have observed people doing this to get their own iPads or any other big ticket prozes but never for a small reward in the end. You ask me now why then do I make a big deal out of this? It is because it is my first time to be a contender to a cheater, I had first hand experience.

REAL FRIENDS VS BOT FRIENDS

I would honestly say that I joined this contest because I wanted to test my brain in answering the trivia and having my real friends like my answer so I will win some free stuff (in this case just mere three boxes of tea). The contest went well from Monday to Thursday morning this week until I observed later in the afternoon that the likes of one of the participants kept on increasing by the minute. At first, I shrugged it off. I knew I had enough friends I could campaign to and my sister is online too so she can tell her friends as well.

The inquisitive me decided to click the likes and check the likers. Good heavens! After carefully thinking of a plan of action, I chose not to delve into the specifics anymore as it only makes me livid about the situation. The screencaps I took will stay in my files so I can look them up one day and be reminded by the sad reality of marketing and consumerism.

A Facebook liking contest is easily maneuvered and won by cunning people by creating multiple fake accounts and "liking" an entry using those fake accounts. If an entry gains more hundreds (or even thousands) of "Likes", there’s no way the contest sponsor can check and determine if all the Facebook accounts are legit or not. And most sponsoring companies NEVER check. The cheater always win, again and again in a Liking contest by shuffling his/her multiple Facebook accounts. -Grace of Sandier Pastures

DENOUEMENT

Of course I did not win. I don’t feel bad for myself because I know I can always buy from the store if my supply runs out. I feel bad for my friends who took the time to vote for me so I am writing this as a warning to myself not to join this kind of contest again. Never, yes, never again will I join and I hope companies will be more conscientious and should investigate at least so they maintain the integrity of their product pages.

Now, I can't even begin to reconcile with myself how low people can go to amass prizes and freebies. This specific contest I joined only has a box or two of tea as prize. What more if the prize was an iPad2 or a trip to some faraway land?

This is not about the prize. This is about a wake up call that people out there are essentially going to stoop down to their level when push comes to shove. I am not going to name the company anymore (because I know that they are not the only ones ganged up by this issue). I am just sincerely hoping that these certain people would change and take it to themselves that what their feeding their families are products of deceit. I know it's wrong to curse but I feel like doing it, so I will indulge myself. I hope the tea does what I can't do. Enjoy your tea party. #JustSaying

I have said my piece and this will be the end of it and I hope that this will be the last time that someone will cheat me. Animetric has sworn off joining these kind of contests too and I am joining the wagon. We learned our lessons the hard way.

By the way, read this interesting LINK from the Facebook Promotions Guidelines.

Hong Kong Disneyland Part 2

To quell me off from that one pathetic issue I just buried, I decided to browse over my Disneyland Hong Kong pictures. Let me share some to you... (Here's Part 1 if you missed it)

This is where hats are designed. Millinery is designing and manufacturing of ladies' hats. The area was cordoned off that time in preparation for the Flights of Fantasy parade.

The Art of Animation building. This is one of the nearest buildings to the gate. It's on the right side of the road and a good place to witness some live animations.

The Camera Shop is essentially a souvenir shop. It is near the roundabout.

I took this shot near the gazebo where Mickey and Minnie gets to convene with their fans. This is Main Street USA.

I took this picture while I was sitting on the curb. That is when my leg was too painful to walk already.

Nice old American buildings...Disneyland HongKong style.

The Disneyland City Hall. Here parents can rent strollers.

I still have so much pictures to share in my Hong Kong files so here's a bunch I took while watching the Flights of Fantasy Parade. I was right smack in the middle of the roundabout (near the gazebo) so I had pretty good captures without utilizing much of the zoom of my camera lens. I did tear up a little while watching the parade because I was too happy to see some of my childhood memories in action...

Mickey's Magical Airship - Mickey Friends

Caught Up in Daydreams - Winnie The Pooh

Romance Takes Wing - Disney Princesses

Jumpin' Jungle Jam - Lion King

The Magic of Pixie Dust - Tinkerbell

Hangin' Ten and Ridin' High - Lilo and Stitch

To Infinity and Beyond - Toy Story

It was still so hot at 330PM but people lined up the sidewalks of Main Street USA to watch the parade. Kids and adults were all equally ecstatic to see Disney characters in action. The music was a mix of English and Cantonese songs.

Minnie and Pluto

Winnie the Pooh and Friends

The dancers at the ball.

The Swan float with the princesses...

Snow White, Cinderella, Belle and Sleeping Beauty

Lion King, Jungle Book, Tarzan

The Hula dancers before the Lilo and Stitch float.

Look up! There's Stitch!
Tinkerbell!

Buzz Lightyear

The Green Paratroopers of Toy Story
